About the image: The image shows a map of the sea surface
temperature of Earth obtained from infrared observations made using
the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) during July,
1984. Temperature patterns are a the result of many influences,
including solar heat, circulation of the oceans and surface wind.
The AVHRR was an instrument on board the NOAA-7 weather satellite
that was part of the National Operational Environmental Satellite
System (NOESS). NOAA-7 was launched atop an Atlas E/F rocket with a
Star-37S-ISS upper stage.Image adapted from NASA Goddard Space
